Eating out with children in Mauritius is easier than in most places: almost everything happens outdoors, service is relaxed about a table that takes two hours, and there is nearly always somewhere for the kids to stand up and walk around. What separates a genuinely family-friendly restaurant from one that merely tolerates families is usually practical — shade over the tables, a bit of space between covers, a kitchen that will do plain noodles or grilled fish without fuss, and food arriving before patience runs out.

The north around Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches is the simplest option: pizzerias and Creole kitchens side by side, lagoon a few steps away, and long opening hours so lunch can slide into the afternoon. The west coast, from Flic en Flac to Tamarin and Le Morne, adds beach tables and bigger gardens, which is what you want with toddlers. In the centre — Moka, Quatre Bornes, Bagatelle and Port Louis — the mall and courtyard restaurants are the wet-weather answer, with air conditioning, high chairs and parking right outside. In the south-east, Blue Bay and Trou d'Eau Douce are the swim-then-eat combination.

A few things worth planning. Go early: 12:00 for lunch and 18:30 for dinner means a calmer room and faster food, and most kitchens here stop taking orders around 21:00. Ask for a terrace or garden table rather than the inside room if you have young children. Not every venue keeps high chairs, so call ahead if you need one. Budget roughly Rs. 400-900 a head at the casual beach and pizza places, more at the beach clubs and hotel restaurants, and remember that portions in Mauritius are generous — one main shared between two small children is usually plenty.
