Best Sundowner Spots

In Mauritius the sun sets into the sea, which means the whole ritual belongs to one side of the island. From Cap Malheureux down through Grand Baie, Trou aux Biches, Albion, Flic en Flac and Tamarin to Le Morne and Baie du Cap, the horizon is open water — no mountains in the way, nothing to block the last twenty minutes of light. On the east coast the sun disappears behind the sugar cane and the Moka range instead, which is why almost every sundowner list on the island leans west.

Timing is short and predictable. Sunset falls between roughly 17:25 in June and 18:50 in December, and the good light starts about forty minutes earlier — so the useful move is to arrive by 17:00 in winter and 18:00 in summer, order once, and let the table go quiet. Most places on this list serve full dinner afterwards, so a sundowner easily turns into a meal. Expect around Rs. 250–500 for a beer or a glass of local wine, more at the hotel decks in Le Morne and Balaclava, and note that some beach bars pack up early out of season.

What actually makes a spot work is less about the drinks list than the geometry: tables that face west, outdoor seating close enough to the water that the light hits you, and no wall of parasols in the way. Lagoon-facing terraces in Grand Baie and Trou aux Biches give the calm, glassy version. Tamarin, Black River and La Gaulette give the dramatic one, with Le Morne Brabant turning black against the sky. Flic en Flac is the most straightforward — long west-facing beach, plenty of places to sit — and Albion adds the lighthouse. Every venue below is on the sunset side, has outdoor seating, and is rated 4.0 or better by a meaningful number of visitors.
