Mauritius has always done sweets well — the island grows its own sugarcane, vanilla and tropical fruit, and the Italian gelato tradition took root here decades ago. Today's scene runs from churned-on-site gelaterias using local mango, lychee and coconut, to the sorbet carts that have served the same neighbourhoods for generations, to a new wave of cake shops and crêperies.

The geography is easy. Trou aux Biches and Grand Baie hold the gelato end of the north. Port Louis does the old-school version — sorbet and ice cream counters around the centre that families have visited for decades. The centre and south mix it up: cake shops in Curepipe and Quatre Bornes, a famous sorbet name in Mahébourg, and a gelato terrace in Flic en Flac for after the beach.

Prices stay gentle: Rs. 80-200 a cone or cup at most places, more for the plated desserts and celebration cakes. One warning — the small artisan places sell out of the popular flavours by mid-afternoon on weekends, and several close one weekday, so check hours before a special trip.
