Breakfast out used to mean a hotel buffet. Not anymore. A wave of cafés and small kitchens now opens early with real menus: sourdough and eggs, smoothie bowls built on pawpaw and passion fruit, croissants from ovens that fire before dawn, and espresso that would hold its own anywhere. Expect Rs. 250-600 a head for brunch with coffee.

Each coast does mornings differently. Grand Baie is the busiest — brunch terraces full by 09:30, so book or arrive at opening. Tamarin and Black River open early for the surf crowd and go quiet by lunch. The centre — Moka, Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes — serves the working week: quicker plates, good coffee, easier parking. Down south and east, Blue Bay and Mahébourg keep it slow; bring time, not a schedule.

Two practical notes. Weekend brunch is the one meal in Mauritius that genuinely sells out — reserve for Saturday and Sunday. And most kitchens here stop breakfast service between 11:00 and 11:30, after which it's the lunch menu, so don't plan a noon croissant.
