Bars & Pubs for a Night Out

Going out in Mauritius splits into three moods. There's the beach bar — feet in the sand, a Phoenix beer or a rum punch, the sun dropping into the sea on the west coast. There's Grand Baie, the island's one real nightlife strip, where bars line the coastal road and stay loud past midnight. And there's the centre: after-work pubs, a rooftop lounge or two, and the country's only working brewery.

The west owns the early evening. Flic en Flac and Tamarin stack their bars along the beach road, busiest from 17:00 when the light turns. Grand Baie starts later and ends later — arrive after 21:00, especially Friday and Saturday. In the middle, Ebène and Quatre Bornes serve the office crowd; the brewpub at Réduit fills up on quiz and live-music nights.

Practical notes: happy hour usually runs 16:00-19:00 and is genuinely cheaper. A local beer runs Rs. 100-180 at a bar, cocktails Rs. 250-450. Last orders inland can be as early as 23:00 midweek, and taxis are the way home — agree the fare before you get in.
