Amigo Restaurant
03/12/2009 by Kavita
When you walk in, it's as though you are going to a family members for dinner. It gives a warm comfortable feeling, a home away from home. The Chef has been with the restaurant for twenty years so you know you can count on excellent food every time you visit. There are so many new resto opening in Mauritius, you can get lost in the choices but Amigo is always a sure thing.

Interesting restaurant, in a wonderful location. Trying to be very contemporary in it's dishes ... the ideas are great, the presentation a little over done if anything, but a serious problem with execution. The ingredients used a brilliant, and the concept of the dishes also, but I think some of the basics are missing in the kitchen. The gratine lacked texture and was more like a soup (albeit with a crusty top), the chicken was succulent but the herbs weren't evident. As for desserts ... the chocolate fondant was just a sponge, and the iles flottantes tasted very eggy on a creme anglais was the consistency of milk. Something tells me they've got a bit carried away with style and lost touch with substance. Still, a great little restaurant, and spite of my comments, everything was enjoyable to eat!

Odd one this, the chef is top notch (from La Pirogues), I'd have no hesitiation in saying his food is brilliant. But best ordered for takeaway ... The restaurant is OK, but a bit empty and neglected. The service just doesn't happen, stuff arrives late, in all sorts of orders, underseasoned, lacking sauces, no salt and pepper on the table so you can't correct it! I get the impression the chef needs to employ a waiter, but needs some customers first. I hope he can sort it out, because his food is excellent, especially the cr4eole dishes.

Wonderful food and in a lovely setting just set back from the beach at Flic en Flac. Most of the Flic en Flac places have a very informal daytime cafe feel, this one is a more traditional restaurant, with an open air bar adjacent. Tasteful decor, and pretty quick service. Had a slightly surreal experience as we entered, one of the waiters seemed to be asking me for a lift back home as he'd forgotten his tie! In fact the wait staff seemed to be arguing a lot with each other and running around, but as the food came quickly and they responded to all requests in a polite and friendly way, that just proved to be a bit of entertainment while our food was prepared. The ginger duck was gorgeous, and, although it seems odd to remark on, the rice and the noodles were delicious. Whole lot was reasonable priced too. I'd definitely recommend this one. If only to see the pretty waitresses with mini-skirts again.
ReplyLe Crocodile Affamé (The Hungry Crocodile) Restaurant

This restaurant is situated within the beautiful and fascinating La Vanille park. It specialises in serving dishes made from the crocodiles they are farming as part of their work. The restaurant is on a platform over the top of the nature walk area, with a great view of the tropical woodland and right in amongst the stunning birdlife. For this reason, it's important to remember a bit of mosquito protection! I suppose it could be said to be one of the more expensive restaurants, but I'm really not sure how much a fresh crocodile steak should cost. The dishes were beautiful, I had the steak, my wife the kebab version. I think these guys really know how to get the best from the croc. The setting is so beautiful and the service excellent, definitely worth a visit. It is INSIDE the park, so you might be advised to ring them first if you want to eat there without paying the entrance fee, although that's not much (300 rupees) and it's a wonderful day out.

The location is good, a first floor restaurant right on the coast road overlooking the beautiful beach, you can see the reef and on a good day the iles aux Cerf. Nice decor inside and an impressive, if somewhat peculiar, indoor rock waterfall. The waitresses were good, but the food took some time to come and was a bit of a disappointment. My wife's seafood skewers were overcooked and tough, my curry de fruits de mer was ok, but nothing to scream about. The driver's fried fish was, however, marvellous. Lucky him. All were a bit small on portions and the menu didn't offer extra side dishes. I'd score it higher for atmosphere, except the hot weather and the water feature (as well as the rain) conspired to make it a sauna inside, truly uncomfortable. One air conditioner was sort of half working, the other not at all, which inevitably meant an awkward debate between the customers as one table was sat under an icy blast and everyone else sweltering! I think if the air conditioners were working, it still would have been difficult for a good number of people.

First of all, we only stopped here to grab a mid-afternoon treat while touring Port Louis last Saturday, so our review may not be an entirely fair reflection of this cafe. It has a great location overlooking the harbour, marred a little by the odd smell coming off the water (which is, of course, not their fault). A nice place to sit in the lunch and afternoon, complimented well by an excellent singer with a good repertoire. Truly, I'd go there to here her again, her voice was amazing. The food (just an icecream and a flambeed banana, was slow to come, and unremarkable. Obviously bought ice cream with squirty cream and now effort to make the experience anything more than cafe snack. Waitresses were polite, but the whole experience is very pushy along the front there, with waiters acosting you for the different establishments.

We only grabbed a takeaway from this place after a long day, so we didn't have high expectations. I got a macaroni de fruits de mer, a couple of pizzas and the pain d'ail. The pain d'ail was decidely odd, not unpleasant, but odd. the rest of it was excellent. The macaroni was superb, and the pizzas far in excess of anything I've had in a UK restaurant, let alone takeway. Very pleased with this, a good fair price, and a pleasant friendly service too.

This place exceeds expectations for it's food, we've visited twice in the last fortnight and been pleased both times. It looks like a simple shopping centre fast food joint, but manages to serve tasty, simple dishes at a fair price. I will say the kitchen is slow, you are either passing and want a quick snakc, shopping and want a quick snack or (like our friend) taking a break from work and want the food to get in front of you in less than 45 mins. The waiters are quick enough, but the chefs need to hurry up a bit. Burgers were great though.

ReplyLa Maree Restaurant

We celebrated an anniversary dinner at Le Maree. It is the ideal romantic setting with table-settings on the beach. The service was friendly but still afforded us privacy. We splurged and each had a seafood platter. The food was impeccably prepared and the lobster was the best I've ever had. Truly recommendable. The winelist can do with some improvement. Granted by my standards I generally think that of any restaurant I eat/drink at. We still had a perfectly good Chardonnay. A note to remember is that you have to book at least a day in advance. This is a very expensive restaurant, but so worth it for that special occasion.

We were told this was the place to hang out at on friday and saturday nights.. Turns out that's because in that specific region, it's the only place open. Another 20 mins heading north you reach Flic-en-Flac, where there's a far better and far wider choice of entertainment at a far more reasonable price... Totally over rated.

I was on vacation for 2 weeks, some friends decided to meet up there. I totally find the place packed with people. The waiters are horrible: you ask for something, either they forgot about it or you get it after 45 mins. I found the food super oily. It's crazy and sad at the same time, it's basically telling you to come and eat at your own risk!!! How convenient! For sure next time am not gonna go there again, no kidding.Well for a Mauritian life style, I think it's expensive for the service it offers! I spent more that a 100 bucks there (which was my treat since I was on vacation)!! and I think 100 bucks for a Mauritian restaurant it's awfully expensive. Where I'm from 100 bucks on food would be fine cuisine! and mind you with good service, otherwise you are not gonna leave good tips! In my opinion, they have way lot to improve!!

My wife and I dined at the restaurant twice of which the first was terrible. We were completely ignored by the staff who didn't seem to understand a single word of English. After about 20 minutes of standing around we were finally seated but were served COLD food! I must admit the second time was alot better but the service needs work!

If u r looking for a quiet dinner out with ur loved ones, DONT GO THERE!! Its always packed, the food is oily and the noise is a real pain. (it reminded me of my lunch time during schooldays...lol) they are always overbooked and even if u have a reservation, u mite have to wait for more than 45mins to get ur table...and by that time u end up having a waiter who is tired and frustrated To have a good quiet diner, go there early :P but on the other hand who in mauritius likes to have diner at 4pm??? lol
