We are all aware that we need to avoid junk foods but oily foods such as pizzas, burgers and so on are often part of our food intake. Besides junk and fast foods, there are other foods that we consume daily that can be just as bad.
Even if you are on a healthy diet, you are probably consuming these foods without knowing that they are silent killers doing your body more harm than good. If you want to stay at the top of your game healthwise, it's better to avoid consuming these foods on a daily basis.
Our body needs sodium and it is also the ingredient that adds taste to most of our meals. It is best to consume salt in moderation to avoid any health complications. An excess of sodium consumption can cause high blood pressure, heart disease, osteoporosis, kidney disease or even stomach cancer. Most fast foods have a lot of sodium, this is one of the main reasons to avoid eating out. If you feel like you have been consuming a little bit too much salt, it might be a good idea to go a few days saltless to reduce its side-effects.
2. Canned Foods
Canned foods are usually advertised as healthy. We all have a few canned foods like tuna, baked beans or even veggies in our kitchen but these foods are often stripped of all nutrients and fiber. Most canned foods are loaded with salt, sugar and artificial flavours. If you are thinking about getting a quick nutritious meal, canned foods will only leave you with foods devoid of nutrition and also harmful for your health. A better alternative is frozen food that usually have no added ingredients.
3. Dried Fruits
These are usually dubbed as superfoods for their high nutrient content but they also contain higher amounts of sugar and calories compared to fresh fruits. Dried fruits are very nutritious and will give you a high dose of calories. If you are looking for a quick boost before a workout, grab some dried dates, apricots, figs or prunes. But avoid consuming too much daily or before bed- you will be consuming unnecessary calories for the night that might lead to weight gain.
4. Baked Food
Who doesn’t enjoy cookies or cake once in a while. Baked goods have their place in our kitchen but don’t make it a habit to always have a sweet dish after your meals. Baked sugary foods are just as unhealthy as ice cream or chocolate. Cakes and cookies contain sugar and white flour. While it is okay to consume these foods, it is best to reduce their consumption. Baked foods are usually devoid of nutrition, all you are consuming are sugar and empty calories.
5. Animal-Based Protein
If you are a meat lover, you know how hard it is to resist the smell or taste of a delicious plate of chicken or beef. While animal-based proteins are healthy, plant-based proteins have essential fiber and antioxidants that are not available in animal proteins. Also consuming protein-high meat diets may lead to disorders of the liver, coronary artery disease, increased cancer risk, among others. The best thing to do is to vary your protein consumption between plant and meat to maintain a good health.
