The café scene in Mauritius grew out of two traditions: French-style pâtisserie and the local snack counter selling gateaux piments and tea. Both survive, and the newer specialty-coffee bars sit on top of them.
Grand Baie and Pereybère cover the tourist brunch trade, Ebène and Moka the weekday office crowd, and Curepipe and Rose Hill keep the older tea-and-pastry houses. Most cafés open early and close by mid-afternoon.
