Sweet Potato Cakes (Gateau Patates)

    Gato Patate (Sweet Potato Cake) is a deep fried sweet with lots of shredded coconut and sugar filling. It is the must-do Diwali cake in Mauritius.

    Ingredients

    • 5 potatoes
    • 2 cups of flour
    • 1 tsp Raisins
    • 3 tbsp Coconut
    • 2 cups of sugar

    Method

    1. Boil potatoes until soft then mash
    2. Add flour
    3. Mix together until dough is fully formed and set aside
    4. Mix sugar, raisins and coconut together
    5. Flatten dough then add mixture to dough and close around the border
    6. Heat oil and fry for 8-10 mins
