Merveille Recipe


Recipe Overview

Gato Merveille, made from basic all purpose white flour only is truly of a great wonder to the taste buds of many. It is one of the most popular snacks (or street food) in Mauritius.

Recipe Ingredients

  • 300g Plain Flour
  • 3/4 Cup Oil
  • 1 Tbsp Salt
  • 1/2 Cup Water

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, mix the altogether flour and salt
  • Add about 1/4 cup of oil
  • Incorporate water slowly until a soft dough is obtained.
  • Put a little oil over the top and allow to rest for 10-15 minutes
  • Divide the dough into small balls
  • Dip the ball in some flour and roll one by one
  • Roll out the dough as thin as possible and reserve
  • Heat your frying pan, preferably a large one, to medium hot.
  • Dip the merveille one at a time and constantly stirring until golden brown.
  • Remove and drain using kitchen towels

Serve with an assortment of chutneys either Tomato or Coriander Chutney or even Tamarind chutney.

Note: The dough should be as thin as if you are making tortilla.
