Recipe Overview
Fish Vindaye is basically fried fish combined with mustard seeds, garlic, turmeric, chilli and onions pickled in vinegar to give it a distinctive taste and flavour. It is very popular in Mauritius, mostly eaten as a “gajak” accompanied with bread.
Recipe Ingredients
- Tuna Fish
- 1/2 Cup Vinegar
- 2 Tbsp Garlic paste
- 2 Tbsp Mustard Seeds paste
- 1 Tbsp Turmeric
- 1 Tbsp Chilli Flakes
- Salt
- Black Pepper
- 1 Tbsp Vindaye Spices
- 2 Medium Onions
- 4 Green Chillies
- Oil
Instructions
- Cut the onions into big chunks
- Add vinegar and leave it to marinate
- Season the fish with salt and pepper
- Slice chillies lengthwise
- In a bowl, combine the mustard seeds, salt, garlic, turmeric, chilli flakes and vindaye spices together
- Add some water into the mixture
- Heat oil in deep frying pan, fry the fish until golden brown. Put aside
- Cut the fried fish into medium pieces
- In a pan, heat 2 big tbsp of oil over medium heat
- Add the vindaye paste in the pan and let cook for 5 minutes
- Keep stirring
- Add the fried fish pieces and turn off the heat
- Mix until well coated
- Add salt to taste
- Add the pickled onions and the sliced chillies and mix well
- Allow to cool before serving
