Fish Vindaye Recipe


Recipe Overview

Fish Vindaye is basically fried fish combined with mustard seeds, garlic, turmeric, chilli and onions pickled in vinegar to give it a distinctive taste and flavour. It is very popular in Mauritius, mostly eaten as a “gajak” accompanied with bread.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Tuna Fish
  • 1/2 Cup Vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp Garlic paste
  • 2 Tbsp Mustard Seeds paste
  • 1 Tbsp Turmeric
  • 1 Tbsp Chilli Flakes
  • Salt
  • Black Pepper
  • 1 Tbsp Vindaye Spices
  • 2 Medium Onions
  • 4 Green Chillies
  • Oil

Instructions

  • Cut the onions into big chunks
  • Add vinegar and leave it to marinate
  • Season the fish with salt and pepper
  • Slice chillies lengthwise
  • In a bowl, combine the mustard seeds, salt, garlic, turmeric, chilli flakes and vindaye spices together
  • Add some water into the mixture
  • Heat oil in deep frying pan, fry the fish until golden brown. Put aside
  • Cut the fried fish into medium pieces
  • In a pan, heat 2 big tbsp of oil over medium heat
  • Add the vindaye paste in the pan and let cook for 5 minutes
  • Keep stirring
  • Add the fried fish pieces and turn off the heat
  • Mix until well coated
  • Add salt to taste
  • Add the pickled onions and the sliced chillies and mix well
  • Allow to cool before serving
