Easy Dal with Calabash Recipe


Recipe Overview

Also known as Dhal Petit Pois or Dhal tipois, this vegetarian dhal recipe is one of the most popular recipes in Mauritian households. Soaking the split peas will help reduce the total cooking time.

Recipe Ingredients

  • 2 cups yellow split peas
  • 1 medium calabash (or chayote)
  • (peeled and cut in 2 inch pieces)
  • 1 carrot (diced)
  • salt and oil
  • fresh thyme and parsley (chopped)
  • 1 onion (peeled and sliced)
  • curry leaves
  • 3 whole peeled tomotoes
  • 1 tbsp ginger garlic paste
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder (saffron)
  • 1 tsp garam masala

Instructions

  • Wash dal and set aside
  • Heat 4 tbsp of oil
  • Add onion, curry leaves and thym. Fry for 1 min
  • Add 3 peeled tomatoes and 1 tbsp ginger
  • Add chopped parsley, mix and leave for 2 mins
  • Add dal, water, calabash and diced carrots (water should cover calabash)
  • Add turmeric powder, garam masala and salt then mix to combine
  • Cook on medium to high heat for 15 mins in the pressure cooker
