Du Pain Frire (Bread slices fried in batter) Recipe


Recipe Overview

A popular favourite among Mauritians that you can find in almost all the homes. Making use of the versatile Bajia batter of gram flour, slices of bread are dipped, fried and accompanied with a spicy chutney of tomato & coriander.

Recipe Ingredients

  • Gram Flour (Besan)
  • White Flour
  • Salt
  • Sodium Bicarbonate
  • Spring Onions
  • Oil
  • Slice Bread
  • Water

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, add 2 cups of besan (gram flour)
  • Add 1 cup of white flour
  • Add 1 tsp of salt
  • Add 1/2 tsp of sodium bircarbonate
  • Add shredded spring onions
  • Mix with 1.5 cups of water
  • Dip the bread slices in the batter
  • Deep fry on medium heat, until light brown and crisp all over
  • Drain on kitchen paper
  • Serve warm with a chutney of your choice
